The owner is changing

On 14 May 2026 LVMH and WHP Global announced a definitive agreement to sell the brand, with G-III Apparel Group as co-owner. The announcement states verbatim: “The transaction is expected to close before year end.”

Until closing, Marc Jacobs still belongs to LVMH, which had held the majority since 1997. Marc Jacobs himself remains, per the announcement, “Founder and Creative Director”.

An ownership statement without a date is a snapshot presenting itself as a fact.

The tote bag, without origin

On 30 July 2026 we opened the page for the Canvas Large Tote, article M0016156, US$228. It describes the material as cotton canvas.

A country of manufacture appears nowhere — neither “Made in” nor “Imported”, which in US retail would be the usual substitute. The tote has existed since 2019; it and the Snapshot are the bags the brand is known for.

What we could not check

The supply chain transparency page stayed closed.

In the footer the brand links to a legal page on the California supply chain act. It refuses access even in a regular browser. Whether a supplier list sits there we therefore do not know — we found none, which is a different thing from “there is none”.

On the founding year

Accounts differ. The joint LVMH and WHP Global announcement names 1984 as the founding of Marc Jacobs International by Marc Jacobs and Robert Duffy. Other accounts give 1986 for the label’s launch and 1993 for the present company. We carry 1984 because it comes from the corporate announcement, and record the discrepancy here.

What we can document

  • Sale to WHP Global with G-III Apparel Group as co-owner, announced 14 May 2026
  • Verbatim from the announcement: “The transaction is expected to close before year end.”
  • Marc Jacobs remains, per the announcement, “Founder and Creative Director”
  • LVMH held the majority since 1997
  • Founded 1984 by Marc Jacobs and Robert Duffy (per the corporate announcement)
  • Canvas Large Tote, US$228, cotton canvas (art. M0016156)
  • No country of manufacture on the product page, checked 30 July 2026

What we cannot

  • Which country the bags are made in
  • Whether a supplier list exists — the relevant legal page refuses access even in a browser; that is a failure to find, not proof of absence
  • The exact founding year; accounts range from 1984 through 1986 to 1993
  • How ownership will be structured in detail after closing
