Theory is not an American independent

Uniqlo is unmistakably Japanese and nobody is surprised by that. Theory reads as a New York label, and it is — by design and by studio. It belongs, however, to the same Japanese group, Fast Retailing. Ownership of a brand and the place its aesthetic comes from are two different things, and the second one is what most people are actually buying.

Tier 1 and Tier 2 in one list

Fast Retailing publishes a production partner list and updates it twice a year. Two details make it more useful than most: it covers not only the garment factories (Tier 1) but also the core fabric mills (Tier 2), and since March 2026 both are published as a single consolidated list rather than two separate files.

Tier 2 is where the industry usually goes quiet. Fabric production — spinning, weaving, dyeing — is where a large share of the environmental load sits, and it is routinely absent from disclosure. Publishing it is a real difference, and it is why Uniqlo sits in the same disclosure category as COS in our directory despite a very different price point.

Most disclosure stops at the sewing factory. What happens to the fabric before that is where the weight actually sits.
